Davidson River Campground is nestled just inside the Pisgah National Forest and only 3 miles away from the beautiful town of Brevard, NC. This is was our first stop with the Obb-a-long tear drop camper. The campground runs along Davidson River, a great place for fishing, tubing, and swimming, and is considered one of the premier trout fishing spots in the southeast but I’m not to good a fishing but I keep trying. From here you can hike the Art Loeb and North Slope Trails, and right across the street you’ll find all the information you need to recreate in the forest at the Pisgah Ranger Station. The Cradle of Forestry Heritage Site, well-known Looking Glass Falls, Sliding Rock, Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education and the Blue Ridge Parkway are just minutes from the campground. We always check out the falls when we’re there. Beautiful Asheville, NC is only 45 minutes away, In another blog I’ll tell you a story about Asheville, while Charlotte and Atalanta are only a few hours from this incredible spot.
Perhaps the best known waterfall in the area is Looking Glass Falls. It’s right next to the road along US276 north, kid friendly, and wheelchair accessible to the upper view. If you are in the area and only have time for 1 quickie waterfall, this would be the one to go to. It’s about 60′ high and swimming is allowed in the pool at the base. I’m not sure how deep it is, but I’ve seen kids swimming and wading. The water is always cold and it’s swim at your own risk. In the summer months, this waterfall is always very crowded, so go early. Remember that wet rocks area very slippery so keep on the path for the best experience.
The campground is open year round and many family programs run from Memorial Day – Halloween. There are 144 campsites for both tents and RV’s – most of which are well shaded. One full loop with electric hook-ups is available year round with picnic tables, tent pads, fire rings & lantern poles on every site. Also, each loop has hot showers and flush toilets. Several loops are with river access but get there early on weekends they go first. Firewood and ice is available at the ranger station and this is nice a Wi-Fi hot spot in the parking lot with a plug in station.
So go check out this great campground with an endless amount to to.
